Renaissance Diamond Ring, 16th Century
Rings like the present example appear frequently in portraits of the Renaissance and were produced throughout Western Europe. The diamond (called the "unconquerable") became associated with love, betrothal and marriage in the fifteenth century. When Mary of Burgundy became betrothed to the Archduke Maximilian, she instructed her consort that "your Grace must have a ring set with a diamond and also a gold ring."
