|Hail Mary, full of grace: Our Lord is with thee..."|
Exquisite Book of Hours leaf on vellum from the late 15th century featuring a richly colored miniature of the Annunciation.
On the left of the painting, beneath a canopy, kneels Mary praying with a book on her knees. To her right kneels the Archangel Gabriel, carrying a staff in his left hand and raising his right hand. Above Mary, coming from a beam of ethereal light is a white presence, presumably marking the moment of conception.
From a late 15th century French book of hours with text written in Latin in black-brown ink. The miniature appears on recto framed by a vibrant border lavishly painted in gold with blue, red, and white floral designs. Below the image are two lines of text beginning with a beautiful large initial "D" painted on a gold background. Verso contains 22 lines of text with 6 1-line initials in red & gold and 1 2-line initial painted in white on a gold background with design. Verso also contains a beautiful border with flowers and acanthus leaves in blue, red, gold & white.
The text is from Officium Beatae Mariae (The Office of Our Blessed Lady), a prayer said at matins (morning). It includes most of Psalm 94.

The text in Latin:
Domine labia mea aperies. Et os meum annunciabit laudem tuam. Deus in adiutorium meum intende. Domine ad adiuvandum me festina. Gloria Patri, et Filio: et Spiritui sancto. Sicut erat in principio, et nunc, et semper: et in saecula saeculorum, Amen. Alleluia. Ave Maria, gratia plena: Dominus tecum. Ave Maria, gratia plena: Dominus tecum.
Venite exultemus Domino, iubilemus Deo salutari nostro: praeoccupemus faciem eius in confessione: et in psalmis iubilemus ei. Ave Maria, gratia plena: Dominus tecum.
English Translation (courtesy of medievalist . net):
Thou O Lord wilt open my lips. And my mouth shall declare thy praise. Incline unto my aid O God. O Lord make haste to help me. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son: and to the Holy Ghost. Even as it was in the beginning, and now, and ever: and world without end, Amen. Alleluia.
Hail Mary, full of grace: Our Lord is with thee. Hail Mary, full of grace: Our Lord is with thee.
Come let us rejoice unto our Lord, let us make joy to God our saviour: let us approach to his presence in confession, and in Psalms let us make joy unto him. Hail Mary, full of grace: our Lord is with thee. For God is a great Lord, and a great King above all Gods: because our Lord repelleth not his people: for that in his hand are all the bounds of the earth, and he beholdeth the heights of the mountains. Our Lord is with thee. For the sea is his, and he made it: and his hands founded the dry land: come let us adore, and fall down before God.
