|Blackfeet/Blackfoot, Canada, Mandan |
From one of the groups at the Missouri headwaters - Blackfoot or Mandan most likely. It is covered with strips of ermine. The horns are sculpted and have red ochre on the back sides. Greasy blue and pink beadwork wraps the horsehair drops which fall from the horns, and also adorns the browband on a white backgroud. Silk ribbons and twisted leather drops, short fringe, and rosettes decorate the leather skull cap, and a red stroud drop with selvedge hangs down the back. The stroud bears horse hoof prints beaded into it in greasy yellow beads. This piece was featured on the cover of a 1993 auction and comes with a copy of the auction book's cover. It has been in a private collection since the auction. Custom stand included.
