|The form of this rare Gwindel Quartz is as good as it gets. A huge open gemmy smoky Gwindel rises up along the left side, the finest possible form having the most perfect graceful twist I have ever seen. The twist in this Gwindel defines the term itself - Gwindel, translated from German actually means "twisted". It is the most textbook open twist imaginable, as if someone drew up the most perfect possible crystallography. The visual impact this has is hard to describe. I compare this to the "S" curve so often referred to when describing ancient Greek sculpture, this Gwindel has the same aesthetic pose as the "Venus de Milo" - so, that is what I have named this piece. I have never seen a better Gwindel for form, aesthetics, size and overall impact, and it sits on an equally attractive and fine quality Smoky Quartz matrix. The Gwindel is absolutely clear, nearly flawless internally. The color is a light smoky and the luster is entirely glass.|
When I first began to see Siberian Gwindels, in the late 1980's, I was shocked at how large they were, and how much they resembled the old Swiss and French ones. I assumed this would eventually make them more common, more available, that never happened. No sooner were they discovered they disappeared just as mysteriously. I have to this day not seen a new one in probably 20+ years. This one came out with the first small group I originally saw.
