|Azerbaijan Province, NW Persia, 1st Decade Of 20th Century|
This high quality Serapi carpet has all the features of the most desirable village weavings from the Heriz area east of Tabriz. What is most immediately striking is the extraordinarily rich and pure colour palette:The clear madder red of the cartouche shaped field, the wide range of blues from deepest navy to light powder blue, natural rose, the tremendous range of composite greens( blue and yellow ) varying from lime to grass to celadon and a rich yellow from the weld plant.Overall, there are probably more than a dozen distinct colours.
The pattern is an elaborated, but still semi-geometric,medallion and corners layout with an arabesque defined ivory central motif with palmette corners. It lies within a larger navy device with matching ragged palmette pendants. The variety of minor geometric buds and leaves, formal blossoms, and angular vines is amazing and repays careful examination. The huge corners continue the central device, but in a slightly reduced form.
The huge in-and-out navy turtle border has a double light blue vine with rosettes and lancet leaves.Bold turtle palmette borders are a feature of the best Heriz weaving of the 1900 - 1920's period. The red open scroll minors are characteristically Heriz and found especially on the best quality pieces.
The foundation is all cotton and the handle is very firm and leathery, almost like a town rug.The dyes are all natural and clearly the work of highly professional dyers.
This carpet displays all the features of the best pre-WWI Heriz carpets and it is a fine example of a type which has never been superseded.Of course such a powerful carpet will dominate a room, but this is what such a masterpiece deserves.

|The term "Serapi" refers not to a place, but a quality of Heriz carpets from around late 19th century to almost WWI: compact weaving; wide, clear colour palette; bold drawing, just elaborated enough to be more than a giant Kazak, but less than a curvilinear town carpet.|
