Akan ceramics are dedicated to the memory of the ancestors. Abusua Kuruwa vessels are decorated with proverb emblems of Akan art, and some, like this exceptional rare and iconic piece, incorporate portrait heads. When not erected on tombs, Abusua Kuruwa are found standing in screens of royal stool rooms (the royal stool is a dramatic symbol of power), as containers for sacred purposes, as sacrificial vessels, or for storing water. Most Abusua Kuruwa pottery that is known consists of fragments - heads and figures - from larger vessels like this one such as those in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Cleveland Museum of Art, and the National Museum for African Art (Smithsonian). Complete vessels like this are exceedingly rare.
