Rare middle Assyrian gold and agate bull pendant, possibly from Ashur.
A finely detailed bull-calf carved of mottled red-brown agate with gold loop around the body.
There are very few known instances of an agate bull wrapped in gold such as this example. A similar piece was found and published by Maxwell-Hyslop that includes two illustrations from a necklace, excavated with a male skeleton. This necklace is now in the British Museum. The publication is testimony to the rarity of such an object and no doubt, much prized by the wearer. Certainly, this was a symbol of strength and virility and such a significant amulet would only have been worn by person of importance.

Vernon Pick was a middle-aged electrician from Minnesota who discovered the uranium Delta Mine, Hidden Splendor, in Utah in 1952. He reaped one million dollars from the mine before he sold it two years later to international financier Floyd Odlum's Atlas Corporation for $9 million and a custom-converted PBY airplane. In November 1954 Life Magazine published an 11-page article titled "Vernon Pick's $10 million Ordeal" that detailed the discovery of the Delta Mine. His jewelry collection was acquired in Switzerland in the late 1950’s.
|Provenance: Vernon Pick private collection, acquired in the late 1950's and then by descent.|
