|Bwa Tribe, Burkina Faso 1768-1849 (TL Test included)|
The meaning and use of this incredible fetish/ power figure is unknown, as similar examples have not been collected. This fired-clay figure is encased in a mass of hand-packed clay. The Bwa are known to create human shrine/fetish figures of terracotta that embody beneficent bush spirits, but it is unknown if that is the function of this piece. This piece is literally an enigma - there is simply nothing with which to compare it. Given its considerable age, we will probably never know more about it. This piece was thermoluminescence tested and found to be have been fired (created) between 1768 and 1849 A.D. The face is disarming and the piece has a great deal of power when placed alone for display. It has been archived in several important museum archives as indicated in the "Provenance" section.
