A splendid Italian silver-gilt book binding from 1744 decorated with rich sculptures in relief over wooden boards, spine made of cloth and pieces of silver-gilt, clasps, edges gilt and gauffered.
Folio [334 x 245 mm] of 257 numbered pages, 1 p. unnumbered, and 14 ll. unnumberedSilver-gilt book richly engraved.
The illustrations of the binding show the crucifixion with Mary and St John on the front cover and the Ascension of the Lord on the back cover.An interlaced design of wine grapes topped by the Virgin and child frames the covers. The four medallions at the angles of the front cover represent St Constantine, St Karalampios, St Georges and St Helen. Cherubs encircle the sculptures in relief representing the crucifixion and the Ascension. 6 lines written in Greek come with the display. Binding dated January, 5th 1744.
This gorgeous binding encloses a Greek Bible printed in Venice by Nikolaos Glykis in 1718.The text on double column is printed in red and black and includes two frontispieces and four full-page woodcuts representing the evangelists.
