Of one piece, boldly embossed with scenes from antiquity set within cartouches, framed with caryatids, all heightened with silver and gold lines, centred by the winged dragon of the Sforza family, all within a border of embossed circular lozenges with applied silver grotesque masks and silver inlaid roped border.
The shield is embossed with four episodes from the life of Julius Caesar:1. The Battle of Dyrrachium: Caesar's armour-bearer cuts off the arm of his assailant2. The defilement of Caesar's robe by the blood of the sacrifice3. (?) The Battle of Pharsalus and death of one of Pompey's generalsand 4. The head and ring of Pompey brought to Caesar on his arrival in Egypt.
