|France, circa 1475|
A remarkable, extremely-detailed 15th-century leaf with a total of 28 images including saints, angels, donors, Madonna and the baby Jesus.
Large 15th century vellum leaf with miniature depicting the adoration of Mary. In the background of the central image are 11 saints and angels forming a triptych. In the foreground are two donor figures kneeling before the Madonna and child. Surrounding the central scene are 13 medallions with images of saints, most of whom are named on bands each holds. The medallions rest on a gold background filled with purple flowers and thistles. Two small animals also decorate the leaf.
The upper and lower blank margins of the front and the lower margin on the back contain extensive contemporary annotations written in a fine brown script. The leaf is remarkable for both the large number of figures presented, as well as the extensive contemporary annotations. The images are bright and clean. A truly beautiful piece of art that also presents a wonderful personal connection to another era.
