|Azerbaijan Province , Northwest Persia circa 1900|
Antique Heriz runners, especially long and narrow examples as is this one, are rare. Most Heriz weavings are carpet size, 7x10 to 12x18. Very few are runners, fewer are this long. The mixed wool and cotton warp indicates real age,in the manner of 19th century Bakhshayesh style Heriz area carpets. The expansive rested medallion style of classic Heriz carpets is here replaced by an alternative of palmettes and star like motives resembling those at the center of large carpets. The field is a rich natural madder red as on the larger carpets. Earth tones with the addition of ivory, four blues and green are the detail tones. The light salmon brown border and camel selvage add a rustic touch. At the bottom end the wide macrame braided finish is still intact. Camel hair and braided end finishes are seen on northwest Persian and south Caucasian rugs. Heriz is not very far from the border with the Caucasus and both the geometric drawing and structural aspects show the Caucasian influence.
This runner is perfectly sympathetic with any room size late 19th century Heriz area carpet.
