|As Roman emperor from 306, Constantine the Great only governed the western part of the Empire. He was seconded by his Caesar, Licinius, who became the Eastern Roman Emperor in 313. In 324, Constantine defeated and executed Licinius. For 13 years, he solely reigned over the Roman world, assisted by his sons; the empire thus was reunified.|
Constantine decided to recenter the Empire's capital, which he placed between Europe and Asia on the site of the old Greek city of Byzantium. He made it the New Rome, Constantinople, a Christian city inaugurated in 330 following more than ten years of construction. A prosperous city, it would be the capital of the Byzantine empire until its fall in 1453.
