|Illinois is not normally known for Galena of this ultimate quality. The best Galenas usually come from Bulgaria and Russia, these mines are considered the benchmark for the species. There are numerous mines around the world that produce Galena but rarely do you see mirror bright sharp lustrous crystals. Illinois has produced a few nice examples. This particular mine, the Hill Ledford (only open from about 1950-1970) has produced the best pieces. This piece is in my opinion one of the top 2 I have ever seen from Illinois. |
The Galena is a stepped cubic crystal sitting atop a deeply colored purple Fluorite matrix. The silvery chrome like luster on the Galena is simply as good as it can possibly get. The overall form and aesthetic has a wonderful architectural shape, very much feeling like a contemporary sculpture or building. The contrast against the purple matrix is very appealing, and this Fluorite clearly indicates the mine it comes from.
