Pair of portraits of the Durfee brothers: James Durfee Jr. and Horatio Nelson Durfee
Attributed to William Matthew Prior (1806-1873), New Bedford, Massachusetts
The portrait of James Durfee, Jr. is inscribed on verso in ink in script lettering: “James Durfee Jr. / when a Boy” and accompanied by a hand written note from Ellen “Nellie” Richard (1882-1978) stating that: “This is my uncle his name is James Durfee Jr- of New Bedford / Ellen Rickard / January 30, 1977”
The portrait of Horatio Nelson Durfee is inscribed on verso in ink in script lettering: “Horatio N Durfee / when a Boy” and accompanied by a hand written note from Ellen “Nellie” Richard (1882-1978) stating that: “This is my uncle his name is Horatio Nelson Durfee of New Bedford / Ellen Rickard / January 30, 1977”
James Durfee was born May 22, 1834 and died October 21, 1858. Horatio Nelson Durfee was born February 5, 1837 and died October 21, 1893; he served in the Civil War and later became an accountant.
James Durfee, Jr. and Horatio Nelson Durfee were two of six children born to James Durfee (1803-1889) a New Bedford, Massachusetts blacksmith, and his first wife Mary Allen (1798-1842). On March 23, 1843, James Durfee, Sr. married Julia Vinal (1822-1855) and the couple had two daughters, Mary Walker Durfee, born January 31, 1847, and Ellen Wade Durfee, born April 16, 1849.
