|A Bronze Armchair by Claude Lalanne, French.|
Conceived in 1984 and completed in 1986; One of a pair of sculptures formed by sweeping iris leaves supported by an arching framework of stems and branches harmoniously bringing together art and utility.
These armchairs were commissioned by the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation for the courtyard of the De Witt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum in Virginia. Founded by John D. Rockefeller, Colonial Williamsburg was known historically throughout America as having the most inspirational gardens so Claude Lalanne, impassioned by the variety and exuberance of nature, was the inevitable choice of artist.
Lalanne is known for incorporating new materials and spirit into the creation of sculptures for daily life whilst promoting harmony between the human and the natural world. Her work is always approachable, removed from the “Fine Art & Sculpture” pedestal and encouraged to blend into its environment. In this work Claude Lalanne offers sculpture which gracefully embraces function and nature whilst also being imaginative and visually arresting.
