|Karaboro Region, Burkina Faso, 1910 1950|
Very little is known about this type of post, as very few have ever entered the Western art market. In their original context, they were buried partially in the ground, as the wear and surface at the base of this post illustrate, and a terracotta vessel was placed in the top structure. The vessel which would have been placed atop the post is described by scholars as a “Spirit Sanctuary Pot.” The terracotta vessel was probably believed to be strongly charged with supernatural power, and served to “activate” the wooden post’s spiritual powers. Very few art/ritual objects of any type have been discovered in the Karaboro region in Southwestern Burkina Faso, making this piece a special find. It is quite intriguing and compelling in person, a bit difficult to convey in photos, and would look stunning when properly placed (it has a custom made base) in a large room or living area.
