A lovely figure with cubsit elements; from one piece of wood with shiny, dark brown patina; like many Malinke and Bamana figures, the pupils are inset with metal tags, reflecting indigenous value throughout the application of "found" (metal) materials; for its age and fragility it possesses minimal cracks or surface damage. This Malinke figure is illustrative of a stylistic mix of Bamana, Marka, and Dogon styles. It is thought by scholars that these figures were used in rituals and ceremonies among the members of tribal associations who attained status through initiatiation and had already reached a certain age; their specific use is not known. The figure reflects significant age and handling. With incised scarification and great detail, It has a fragility and delicateness that is not conveyed effectively in photos.
