Description

Ancient region of Gandhara, area of Taxila, 3rd - 5th century

A larger than life size head of the Buddha from the ancient region of Gandhara. The use of stucco, the treatment of the hair and the distinct facial features all indicate a Taxila origin.

Modeled in stucco, this expressive and sensitive rendition of the historical Buddha, Shakyamuni, displays powerful patrician features, with heavily lidded, almond shaped eyes under high arching brows, and full lips. His heart shaped face framed by elongated, pierced ears, and wavy hair pulled back and over the prominent ushnisha.

Remnants of red pigmentation are visible in the interior of the ears.

On a modern custom mount. Mounted height: 21”
