Unusual screen depicting a cherry blossom festival with two horses painted on a cloth banner (notice the three gold slits on the banner). On the other side of the banner, a nobleman or samurai would enjoy viewing the cherry blossoms in privacy. Nobelmen and samurai would often have their favorite horses painted on a screen or banner as a symbol of status or pride. This 19th century Japanese screen is from the Tosa School of painting and measures 68 1/2" high x 148 1/2" wide. It is painted with mineral pigments on gold leaf. |
